about

Madeleine Ting, better known as Maddy, is a very curious individual who loves to draw anime and write fiction. She's a part of the ASB Publicity Commission, Carlmont's Varsity swim team, and Carlmont's Varsity water polo team.

Maddy first became interested in journalism after looking for ways to expand her writing repertoire. She's now the Social Media Editor-in-Chief of Scot Scoop, Carlmont's award-winning electronic newspaper, and is the foremost expert and founder of podcasting in the journalism program.

Highlander

I've written features on exploring essential elements of American society as a Staff Writer for Carlmont's award-winning newsmagazine, The Highlander. I've also written for Scotlight, the highlighted section of the Highlander that tackles global and national issues in a student-friendly manner.

Guides

Beginning in January 2019, I began a series of guides designed to help both fresh-off-the-boat MAS students and journalism veterans optimize their reporting for greater audience engagement.

Multimedia Madness

This guide is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about multimedia and its applications in journalism. It goes over different types of multimedia along with the point system that is used for grading in Media Arts.

ABOUT THE MARKETER OF THE YEAR AWARD
See my Marketer of the Year Portfolio here!
The National Scholastic Press Association presents its Individual Awards honoring the best individual work in scholastic journalism each year. Entries are submitted by students across the nation and judged by teams of professionals with experience and expertise in the area of each particular contest. The title of Marketer of the Year is awarded to the individual with the greatest contribution to their school, community, and society via a detailed marketing plan utilizing social media and other communication platforms.

ABOUT THE NSMC EXCELLENT RATING
See my award-winning design here!
The National Student Media Contests evaluate each skill practiced in a 21st-century media classroom. Students across the nation are encouraged to enter in categories ranging from photojournalism to broadcast to graphic design. Entries are judged by at least two professionals in the given field. In all, 641 students competed; of those, 249 won awards, and only 88 excellents were given.

During the Graphic Design: Advertising contest, participants were provided with a prompt and told to design one 5-by-7-inch black-and-white or color ad. The judges looked for: Typography and artistic details fit the topic or content. Follows current design trends. Creative and imaginative concept. Considers what motivates the audience. Includes appropriate pitch, business, event or organizational identification. Design moves the reader’s eye through the ad.

ABOUT THE HONOR ROLL
In addition to serving for at least two years on a student media staff, in broadcast, newspaper, magazine, online or yearbook, students must earn a 3.5 or higher grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Publication advisers and journalism instructors nominate students for the honor.
